If you want to learn how to use a map and compass, or are in need of a refresher, then this is the perfect place to begin.

From our anonymous course evaluation
This course will provide you a solid foundation in land navigation. You will start with the basics, like parts of the compass, how to read a topographic map, and understanding declination. You’ll learn how to use related tools, equipment, and resources. Then, we will set off into the fields and woods to put your knowledge to use in an active and hands-on way so that you start to become comfortable setting bearings, translating terrain features, and dead-reckoning between checkpoints.
We’re confident that you’ll find this training worth your time and investment. Most other courses offered elsewhere last just a couple of hours, most of it in the store, or are taught by staff with little experience, most of it gleaned from internet videos. True North’s trainers have worked extensively with the U.S. military, including Army Special Operations Command units, Air Force Combat Training Squadrons, and Sailors from the Naval Special Warfare Command.
That’s why so many of our clients travel from out of state to learn from us. Each class often includes a diverse mix of hikers, mountain-bikers, and hunters, as well as First Responders and military personnel, plus others who are simply eager to master this invaluable skill. Yet they all share a common desire to learn and enjoy some fun in the process!
Many participants choose to pair this course with our Advanced Land Navigation in the same weekend. That’s because it typically takes two days to fully cover and confidently understand the essentials of using a map and compass. It also tends to maximize their training time and minimize their overall costs.
